Cane was presented with the Everett R. Dyer Distinguished Service Award by NYSSBA President Sandra Lockwood at the Associations Annual Convention in Syracuse on Saturday, October 26. The distinguished honor came as a surprise to Cane, who graciously accepted. The NYSSBA Distinguished Service Award is presented each year to one current or former school board member among the thousands in the state who has done the most for public education and the children of his or her community.
“Len is a staunch believer in school and business partnerships,” Lockwood said. “He truly understands how important it is to prepare our students to meet the challenges of the 21st century.”
Cane’s school board service record speaks for itself. He served as a member of the Kingston City School Board from 1976 to 1981, holding the position of president for one year and vice president for two years. He is known for actively promoting the Kingston schools to various clubs and organizations throughout the Kingston area. In 2001-02, he served on a committee to develop new mission, vision and belief statements for the district.
Cane has been a member of the Ulster County BOCES Board since 1983. He was president from 1996 to 2001 and vice president from 1993 to 1996. He has also served on the BOCES Career & Technical Advisory Council and a statewide BOCES Advisory Council.
Since 1976 Cane has been a member of the Ulster County School Boards Association where he is currently chairman of the Nominating Committee. He was a member of the NYSSBA State Legislative Network and has been a convention presenter and moderator.
Cane is presently the executive director of the Ulster County Chamber of Commerce. He and his wife, Lee, have one son and a granddaughter.
NYSSBA serves as an educational and advocacy organization for nearly 700 school boards across the state.
