“Everyone here tonight has a unique story. How you came to Ulster BOCES represents a success story. Each of you made a decision to tackle the challenge of returning to school. You survived and achieved this certificate of graduation. This evening, your fortitude, persistence, and pride are to be celebrated,” remarked Howard Korn, director of Career & Technical Education and Adult Services, as he addressed the graduates. “Remember that education opens the door to a lifetime of opportunities. I wish you the very best of luck.”
A very special highlight of the event was The Rose Ceremony. During this portion of the evening, the song “The Rose” was played as each student presented a single red rose to the two people who made a difference in his or her life. Then several students shared stories of their GED experiences with their fellow graduates, family, and friends.
“Fifteen years ago I came from Ireland to the United States,” reflected Mary Schomer of Kingston. “I’d been out of school for 24 years. I did a lot of studying. There was information I did not know and had not ever learned. It has been a long road for me.” Schomer then thanked her two young children, who sat proudly watching her from their seats. She credited them as her source of inspiration to complete her own education. “When I came home from work and couldn’t help them with their homework, it made me want to do this. I can’t believe I’m here tonight. It’s just so amazing!”
“This is quite an accomplishment for each of you,” stated Elizabeth Hayter, assistant director for Adult Education at Ulster BOCES. “Perseverance in life is being steadfast, persistence is being stubborn...throughout this program you have all shown great perseverance and persistence. The same drive that got you through the good days and the bad days is the same persistence that will carry you through to a successful future. I wish you a great future!”
