Moving On: 2005 Recognition & Graduation Roundup

Alternative School Students Recognized During Heartfelt Ceremony

The Ulster BOCES Center for Alternative Education’s (the A-School’s) annual Recognition Ceremony honored the achievements of graduating students who were once considered “at risk” of dropping out of school. Steeped in tradition, guests at the ceremony witnessed heartfelt exchanges between students and staff, including many shared fond and “funny” memories. Each speaker reinforced the deep, caring bond that is a trademark of the school’s setting.

Rosemary Mannino, principal of the A-School, addressed the audience filled with parents, family, and friends of the graduating class. “This school is the school of a million and one chances,” began Mannino. “Ninety percent of this year’s graduating class will have successfully completed a Career & Technical Center program. This year’s students will not only be leaving with a diploma, but with specific career skills.”

Mannino then looked out proudly at the students clad in their caps and gowns. “I couldn’t be prouder to know each and every one of you. I think that this quote by Tom Brokaw says it best, ‘You are educated. Your certification is your degree. You may think of it as the ticket to the good life. Let me ask you to think of an alternative. Think of it as your ticket to change the world.’”

“Today is a celebration not only for our students, but for all of you that have worked so hard to help these exceptional young people reach their goals,” noted senior class advisor, Dawn Krom, before speaking directly to the graduates. “Despite numerous obstacles, you all stuck to it and are here today to be recognized for your accomplishments.”

Ulster BOCES Center for Alternative Education Class of 2004 alumnus Nicholas Bernier from Highland Central School District, who is currently an Emergency Medical Technician for the Highland Fire Department, was the guest speaker. He encouraged the graduates to succeed and reflected on how the school helped him to walk the path of success. “At the A-School, I was able to focus on my school work and learn great social skills. I was also able to attend the Career & Technical Center. My appreciation goes to the people at Ulster BOCES who make it what it is.”

The Ulster BOCES Center for Alternative Education offers a full academic program approved by the New York State Education Department. Students receive academic credits for their coursework, and upon completion of all required coursework and exams, earn their high school diplomas from their home school districts.

The mission of the school is to provide at-risk students with additional chances for success in a safe, supportive school community. Students are able to reconnect with themselves, and others, as well as establish career goals through creative academic and hands-on learning experiences. The program’s objective is to reduce the dropout rate by improving attendance and completion of academic goals.  End of story
