Ulster BOCES to Celebrate National Career & Technical Education Week National CTE Week is a commemoration of career and technical education programs and was originally established by a Congressional Resolution. This year’s theme of the weeklong celebration, “Career Tech: Training Tomorrow’s Workforce,” emphasizes the role career and technical education and its business/industry partners play in helping youths and adults achieve career success in the new millennium. The Ulster BOCES Career & Technical Center, located on Route 9W in Port Ewen, offers students an education that is on the cutting edge of progress. The goal of the Center is to ensure that all students who attend graduate with up-to-date skills in their chosen profession. A strong emphasis is placed on attainment of technical skills, employability skills, and academic skills. The New York State Education Department-approved programs offered at the Career & Technical Center allow integration of a Technical Communications Instruction (TCI) program, which infuses English Language Arts and math into the curricula. According to the Association for Career and Technical Education, research shows that many of the country’s fastest-growing occupations require the technical skills taught in career and technical education programs. “National statistics show that students who graduate with a Career Technical Endorsement on their Regents diploma do better in college and in their post-secondary education. For students entering the workforce, they are able to earn more than those who do not have a career and technical education,” states Gary Suraci, principal of the Ulster BOCES Career & Technical Center.
