Ulster BOCES Students Raise Money for Community

Students in the Ulster BOCES Early Childhood Education program tested themselves in the field of community service this spring and their grade reports are back with some very high scores.

The enterprising students raised more than $1,000 selling hundreds of peppermint-flavored pink candy ribbons (created especially for the project by Michael’s Candy Corner in Kingston) for breast cancer awareness and donated the entire amount to the Fern Feldman Anolick Breast Center at Benedictine Hospital. They also brought in nearly $400 baking and selling cookies and cakes for Ulster County flood victims, which will be dispersed by the Ulster Lions Club.

“This is a tremendous gift to us,” said Sister Gabrielle Keenen, vice president of Quality Resource Management at the Fern Feldman Anolick Breast Center. The students recently visited the Center to present their donation and tour the facility. “I want you to know, this is a great thing you’ve done for your community,” she told the students. “Thank you so much.”

The group of young fundraisers, many of whom are members of the local chapter of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America, Inc. (FCCLA), are all high school juniors and seniors from Ulster County school districts.

The FCCLA, a national nonprofit student organization that promotes community involvement through a variety of programs, gives students an opportunity to further expand and develop leadership and life skills such as planning, goal setting, problem solving, decision-making, and interpersonal communication – all skills needed in both the home and workplace.

The Ulster BOCES Early Childhood Education program exposes students to a variety of career opportunities in the field of education where students have the opportunity to prepare, deliver, and evaluate instruction at all grade levels, from pre-school through graduate education. Students work side-by-side with school administrators, guidance counselors, and teachers. The intense hands-on learning experience goes beyond student teaching or shadowing experiences.

The Fern Feldman Anolick Breast Center provides comprehensive preventative, diagnostic, treatment, and recovery services to more than 10,000 women each year. The Center offers a complete range of breast health services including mammograms, breast examinations by specially trained and certified nurses, ultrasound, laboratory services, dietary consultation, Mammotome system biopsy, counseling, and a lending library. The Breast Center also participates in clinical research studies through the National Cancer Institute and the University of Vermont Cancer Center to advance knowledge about breast cancer.  End of story
