Kingston Police Officer & K-9 Ery Visit Ulster BOCES
Officer Roger Boughton, “Obedience is the foundation of training,” explained Officer Boughton. “This dog is so smart he can open a car door and get in himself. Following a question-and-answer period, Officer Boughton proceeded to conduct several outdoor demonstrations with Ery, including having the dog search out and locate planted evidence. He explained to the students how reliable a K-9 partner is. “These dogs are so keen on their senses. If the dog indicates that he smells something while on the job, then the dog’s senses give probable cause to search the vehicle, boat, house, or person because there is case law to back it up.”
Ulster BOCES Criminal Justice instructor J.H. Ingellis was pleased with the questions his students posed to Officer Boughton. “Demonstrations, such as this, allow the students to conduct career exploration as a police officer, and getting to meet an officer person-to-person, gives the students an opportunity to gain valuable first-hand experience from an expert in the field.”
