April 2006 16th Annual Angelo del Toro Puerto Rican/Hispanic Youth Leadership Institute
The Mid-Hudson Bilingual Education/Technical Assistance Center (BETAC), located at Ulster BOCES in New Paltz, is proud to sponsor a delegation of 12 regional high school juniors and seniors to the statewide Puerto Rican/Hispanic Youth Leadership Institute (HYLI).
These students will participate in a series of trainings to focus on leadership and public speaking skills, effective community advocacy, and the legislative process. They will also participate in a Mock Assembly representing their own New York State Assembly persons.
The leadership development event will take place in Albany from April 29 to May 1. The students selected represent the four-county region of Dutchess, Orange, Sullivan, and Ulster. Students attending come from the school districts of Kingston, Wallkill, Spackenkill, Middletown, Newburgh, Fallsburg, and Liberty.
The attendees were selected from 34 students representing 16 Mid-Hudson area school districts. Students were nominated by their schools to apply for the program and were invited to attend two local training sessions held at SUNY New Paltz. From these 34 students, 12 Albany delegates and four alternates were selected. The goal of the HYLI is to prepare the students to become positive agents of change as well as to celebrate their shared Latino heritage. In addition, the program is aligned with the New York State High School Social Studies Learning Standards.
On Saturday, April 1, 2006, the Mid-Hudson HYLI delegates, alternates, and their parents attended an orientation session at Kingston City Hall, where they began preparing for the upcoming Albany conference. The students will polish their parliamentary procedure skills in preparation for the Mock Assembly, which will take place in the New York State Assembly Hall on Sunday, April 30, 2006.
