November 2007 Ulster BOCES Nursing Students Participate in Alzheimer’s Fundraiser
Ulster BOCES Nursing students had a strong presence at a recent Alzheimer’s Memory Walk hosted at SUNY Ulster in Stone Ridge. Over 20 students showed their support by participating in the walk, which is the nation’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s, a progressive and fatal brain disease that afflicts over five million Americans.
Two Onteora High School students said they enjoyed walking to support the worthy cause. The students, who are both juniors at Onteora, are currently enrolled in the first year of the Ulster BOCES Certified Nursing Assistant Program.
A first year Practical Nursing student and Saugerties resident said she came to support the cause because she has seen the seriousness of Alzheimer’s in her personal and professional life. “People in my family have Alzheimer’s, and I have also seen the effects of the disease at work,” said the student, an 11-year employee of Ulster-Greene ARC, a not-for-profit agency that supports disabled persons.
One component of the Ulster BOCES Nursing curriculum is that students are required to volunteer at least 12 hours of community service over the course of their studies.
“Having community service as part of the curriculum helps engage students in the community they may one day serve as nurses,” comments Ulster BOCES Nursing instructor Marcie Davis.
