July 2007 Ulster BOCES Earns Major Grant Award for United States History Education
Ulster BOCES has been awarded a $912,393 grant from the United States Department of Education to strengthen American history education programs in school districts throughout Ulster County. It is one of 122 grants totaling $116 million awarded to 40 states nationwide.
"This is a great grant award for Ulster County BOCES, said Ulster BOCES District Superintendent Marty Ruglis. It will allow teachers to study original documents and will bring history alive in classrooms throughout the county. As a result of this program, students will be excited to learn and will be able to better relate to the events of history.
The money will be used to help increase the traditional American history knowledge of teachers through a three-year professional development program so they can better educate their students.
The training program involves two annual week-long summer institutes with the State University of New York (SUNY) at New Paltz and is designed to improve content knowledge in American history. The program will also include monthly workshops with the New York Historical Society, museums, and historic sites throughout the region. For primary sources and historic content, UIster BOCES has partnered with SUNY New Paltz, New York Historical Society, The Tenement Museum, Samuel Morse Historic Site, FDR Presidential Library, and the Schomburg Center for Research and Black Culture.
