July 2007 Ulster BOCES Welcomes New Deputy Superintendent
Principal of Bennett Elementary School and director of Elementary Education in the Onteora Central School District for the past 14 years, Cassel is no stranger to Ulster BOCES. She previously worked as supervisor of Special Education from 1991 until 1993 before leaving for her career at Onteora.
“I think we really created a sense of community,” reflected Cassel of her accomplishments in Onteora. “In a rural area, the school often serves as the hub of the community and at Bennett, we made a place where everyone could belong.”
Cassel, a 20-year resident of Woodstock, says she is looking forward to her new position at Ulster BOCES. “Ulster BOCES is an essential part of the county and I am honored to help it continue its wonderful reputation and wonderful services,” she states. Dr. Cassel aims to help Ulster BOCES stay current and vibrant. “I am excited about the broad perspective of my position as deputy superintendent, and I know I will be challenged by it,” she says.
Cassel holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from SUNY Purchase, a master’s degree in special education from Columbia University and a doctorate in educational administration from Fordham University. In the past, she has also held the positions of assistant principal at Duzine Elementary School in New Paltz and educational supervisor for the Astor Day Treatment Program, a center for emotional disturbed children.
With over 25 years experience in the education field, Cassel has witnessed many changes to the face of education, but maintains it is important to keep students as the focus. “Today there is a heightened sense of accountability, driven a great deal by data,” she states. “There must be a balance. While data is important, we can’t forget to celebrate the day-to-day accomplishment of students.”
A native of Manhattan, Cassel enjoys travel, cruises, reading, and attending Broadway shows in her spare time.
One of her first priorities as deputy superintendent will be to listen, Cassel says. “I’d like to sit down and talk with people about the direction of BOCES. Hopefully we can implement some new ideas and keep going with some of the great ones.”
