July 2007 Ulster BOCES Adult Education Instructor Named Outstanding Teacher of the Year
Shirley McLaren, an instructor at the Ulster BOCES Adult Career Education Center in Port Ewen, has been recognized as an Outstanding Teacher for 2007 by the New York Association for Continuing and Community Education (NYACCE). McLaren was honored at the 56th annual NYACCE Conference in Albany recently.
“We’re very proud of Shirley,” said Elizabeth Hayter, assistant director of Adult Education. “Her dedication to students over the past sixteen years as a literacy teacher has allowed many of them to pass the GED and move on with their lives.”
NYACCE recognizes exceptional adult educators for their commitment and dedication, as well as diligence in understanding the realities facing their adult students and the ability to address each student’s individual needs. The organization’s goals include making quality lifelong learning a right and privilege to everyone and utilizing local and State resources and facilities in meeting the needs, wants, and concerns of individuals, families, and communities.
The Ulster BOCES Adult Career Education Center offers the community a wide range of career, literacy, and continuing education opportunities in the promotion of life-long learning. Programs include GED (General Educational Development) preparation; English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL); employment preparation, including application and interview skills; and workforce training in information technology, health occupations, manufacturing, and skilled trades. The programs focus on two goals: first, to develop each student’s skills and competency in order to expand their employment opportunities and thus improve their quality of life and that of their family’s; and second, to increase each student’s self-confidence, personal growth, and level of achievement – all vital factors in securing and retaining employment in the 21st century.
