Overview

Covering over 1,127 square miles, Ulster County is a haven of raw, natural beauty and home to more than 177,750 people. With the ragged cliffs and ridges of the stunning Shawangunk and Catskill Mountain ranges, the rolling valleys and countrysides, and the lush banks of the Hudson River, Ulster County is comprised of 20 towns, three villages, and a small city.

Deep historical roots, some dating as far back as the mid-1600s, have been preserved in these communities and many national landmarks stand today, inviting people to come journey through the area’s rich past. If ever there was a place where awe-inspiring landscapes and the historical preservation of a time long gone by could find harmony with a modern day infrastructure, it is certainly Ulster County.

Among the treasures found within Ulster County is the public school system, which serves over 28,000 children from eight local districts. Ulster County offers educational settings from rural to suburban with student population sizes ranging from 1,800 to over 8,000, providing parents with a wide range of choices and opportunities for their children.

With many districts’ attendance rates and achievement levels meeting or exceeding statewide averages, Ulster County public schools are some of the best New York has to offer. Much of their strength comes from strong collaborations between families, communities, businesses, human services agencies, and other educational facilities. School administrators from each of the local districts formally gather each month to collaboratively address common educational issues and to create an ongoing exchange of information and ideas, further strengthening the effectiveness and leadership of all public schools in the region. Ulster County is also the home of some of the most technologically “connected” schools in New York State. By partnering with other school districts through Ulster BOCES, essential technology and related support services are affordable to schools. A countywide approach to the infrastructure necessary to offer high-speed Internet connectivity enables educators to take innovative approaches to teaching, including online/distance education classes and technology-enriched learning for students and educators. The ability to infuse sophisticated technology into day-to-day activities not only enhances student learning, but also allows schools to operate at higher levels of efficiency.

Visit our local school districts' websites to learn of the many programs and services made available to students that provide opportunities for unique, engaging, and successful educational experiences.
