Substitute Teacher Calling

Ulster BOCES maintains a 24-hour telephone answering service. Teachers who are going to be absent call the service to request a substitute to cover their classes for the day. Ulster BOCES staff members review the calls on the answering machine tape, make lists of vacancies for that day, and then call substitutes to fill the vacancies. Ulster BOCES staff members then call the contact person in each school district to provide the names of the absentees, the reasons for their absences, and the names of the substitutes. A report is made and mailed to each school district. Each school district provides its own list of substitutes, updating it at intervals during the school year.
