There’s an academic initiative forming at the Ulster BOCES Career & Technical Center known as the “Fighting 100” and students are trying their best to join.

This effort targets a select group of students from various school districts in Ulster County who have been recognized for their academic achievements and their desire to win the “fight” to make schools better learning institutions for future students. These students were recently commended for their efforts during a High Schools That Work (HSTW) pep rally held at the Career & Technical Center.

“The primary reason for participating in the national High Schools That Work initiative is to raise student achievement,” states Gary Suraci, principal of the Career & Technical Center. “These ‘Fighting 100’ students will be taking a four-part, six-hour assessment this month, and this is our way of supporting them,” explains Suraci.

The assessment will give statistical information on how the Career & Technical Center is supporting student performance in the areas of English, math, science, and technological studies.

During the pep rally, letters of congratulations and encouragement from Congressman Maurice Hinchey, Senator John Bonacic, and Assemblyman Kevin Cahill were read to the students.

“One of the most effective tools for improving the climate, curricula, and teaching in our schools is to listen to what students have to say. Ulster BOCES Career & Technical Center is dedicated to continually improving the education opportunities afforded to students,” states Congressman Hinchey. “I am confident that your efforts and dedication here will provide you with a solid foundation for the future, as well as benefit the students who follow you. Thank you for being part of this important program and making a difference in improving your school.”

Senator Bonacic commended the students on their academic achievements. “In a time when our nation faces unprecedented challenges, our leaders of today are confident in America’s future because of your leadership abilities and willingness to make contributions to our society.”

“You are the ‘Fighting 100,’ and I am hard-pressed to think of a better title for your group, which quite literally represents the future of Ulster County,” states Assemblyman Cahill. “I appreciate your vision and willingness to improve our school community and learning environment.”

Under the national HSTW program, a framework of goals and 10 Key Practices are provided for high schools to follow that enables them to provide improved academic, as well as career and technical, instruction. It is the belief that most students can learn complex academic and technical concepts if they are taught in an effective learning environment.

The Ulster BOCES Career & Technical Center has been evaluated by the State Education Department (SED) and has been commended for their leadership role in the High Schools That Work program. End of story
