Ulster BOCES students in the Aviation Careers/Professional Pilot Training program at the Career & Technical Center have clear skies ahead for their flight into aviation college. The College of Aeronautics in New York City has just established an articulation agreement with Ulster BOCES for students completing the Aviation Careers/Professional Pilot Training program at the Career & Technical Center in Port Ewen.
Now, in addition to receiving high school credits, students who have successfully completed the Ulster BOCES program in Aviation Careers/ Professional Pilot Training and pass the Federal Aviation Administration’s private pilot’s examination may enter the College of Aeronautics with advanced standing and receive five college credits towards their associate’s or bachelor’s degree in Aircraft Operations. The course of study will prepare students for careers as commercial pilots or to work in other areas of commercial aviation.
“The whole idea is to motivate students beyond their high school experiences and to help jump-start their college careers,” says Gary Suraci, principal of the Ulster BOCES Career & Technical Center. “This will be a seamless educational experience from high school to college.”
Ulster BOCES Aviation Careers/Professional Pilot Training is a two-year program for high school juniors and seniors that prepares them for a private pilot’s license. The program infuses high technology, science, and mathematics into the students’ curriculum, while teaching them to fly at River Aviation, Inc. in Kingston.
According to Suraci, the starting salary for commercial airline pilots is $80,000-$100,000 a year. Other opportunities in aviation include airport management and maintenance operations.
“The sky is the limit for students interested in pursuing an aviation career through the Career & Technical Center and then the College of Aeronautics,” says Suraci.
