Ulster BOCES very own Diane Davies, R.N., supervisor for Health Occupations and New Visions programs, was selected by the YWCA of Ulster County as one of this year’s 12 Tribute to Women honorees. The program recognizes outstanding Ulster County women who have shown leadership and service in the areas of healthcare, education, the arts, government, business, and community service. The honorees were formally recognized at a banquet on October 12 at the Wiltwyck Country Club in Kingston.
Davies, who was honored for her outstanding contribution to education, has been supervisor of Health Occupations at Ulster BOCES for 10 years. During her tenure, she developed and expanded the Health Occupations program at Ulster BOCES to include Certified Nursing Assisting, Licensed Dental Assisting, Surgical Technology, Phlebotomy, Infection Control, LPN Return to Practice, RN Return to Practice, Train the Trainer (prepares nurses to teach other nurses), and EKG/EKG Interpretation classes.
Six years ago, Davies helped create the New Visions Careers Exploration Program, a demanding course of study for high performing high school seniors that exposes them to career options and industry standards, and which also provides them with first-hand experiences in a given field. Aside from giving students practical knowledge, the program also affords them the insight needed to make wise career choices. The first New Visions program -- in Health Careers Exploration -- was inaugurated during the 1995-96 school year and provided students with hands-on learning experiences through internship rotations within the various specialty areas available in healthcare careers. New Visions Legal, Education, and Communications Careers Exploration Programs followed in successive years.
“Diane is dedicated to providing the highest quality programs that meet the needs of the healthcare industry and the needs of high school and adult members of our community,” says Howard Korn, director of Career & Technical Education at Ulster BOCES. “Through her vision, intelligence, and determination, she has designed effective programs where learning is optimal and student performance and outcomes are superior. Ulster BOCES is very proud of her accomplishments and privileged to have her on staff.”
