Amidst a sea of smiles and tears of joy, congratulations abounded at the tenth annual Ulster BOCES General Equivalency Diploma (GED) Graduation recently held at the Port Ewen Educational Center.
Seventy students from across Ulster County completed the diploma requirements during the 2000-01 academic year, and four students were recognized during the graduation ceremony for the outstanding achievement of receiving a score of 299 or higher on their GED exam.
A very special highlight of the event was The Rose Ceremony. During this portion of the evening, the song “The Rose” was played as students presented a single red rose to the person who made a difference in their lives. Then several students shared stories of their GED experiences with their fellow graduates, family, and friends.
“We at Ulster BOCES are very proud of you. Now let the music of life sweep you off your feet and know that anything is possible,” stated Elizabeth Hayter, assistant director for Adult Education at Ulster BOCES. Quoting television personality Oprah Winfrey, Hayter said, “‘When I look into the future, it’s so bright it burns my eyes.’” She then slipped on a pair of sunglasses, before turning to the graduating students to say, “You are the future and it looks so bright. Congratulations.”
“Each of you made a decision to take the challenge of going to school. This evening is about you and your fortitude, persistence, and pride in yourself,” said Howard Korn, director of Career & Technical Education and Adult Services as he addressed the graduates. “You should be commended by everyone for a job well done. I wish you the very best of luck.”
