This July, current and potential school leaders from Dutchess, Orange, Sullivan, and Ulster Counties will be invited to the Fishkill Holiday Inn for a three day Summer Leadership Institute. The Institute, being held from July 9-11, is a program of the Mid-Hudson Leadership Academy (MHLA) at Ulster BOCES.

With approximately 60% of the current school leadership planning to retire within the next five years, the upcoming shortage of qualified and able school administrators is a real concern in New York State, Jeffery Hanna, director of the Mid-Hudson Leadership Academy, explained.

“We have structured the Summer Institute to provide a significant step forward in meeting the needs of aspiring, as well as practicing, school leaders in the Mid-Hudson region,” Hanna added.

The keynote speaker at this year’s MHLA Summer Leadership Institute will be Dr. Sara Lawrence-Lightfoot, a sociologist and the Emily Hargroves Fisher Endowed Chair’s Professor of Education at Harvard University. Lawrence-Lightfoot will be speaking on key educational themes from her most recent book, Respect: An Exploration.

To Lawrence-Lightfoot, the concept of respect is an empowering force that can reshape relationships and overcome traditional social and economic boundaries to create a new dynamic for personal and professional relationships.

Among the many other presenters at the Institute are John Eller, the recipient of the National Principal of the Year award who has trained and developed master educators for the past 17 years, and Jan Hammond, the chair of the Educational Administration Department at SUNY New Paltz.

The MHLA is a program of the New York State Education Department. It is comprised of the Mid-Hudson Joint Management Team, component school districts, higher education institutions, business and industry, and professional associations and organizations. It is charged with helping practicing and aspiring school administrators become successful, effective, and healthy leaders in our schools and communities by offering programs and workshops focused on providing quality professional development for school leaders. The Mid-Hudson Leadership Academy also works to expand the applicant pool for school administrator positions, assist administrators in coping positively with their environments, and help to educate the public about the role and importance of school leaders.
