The investigation consists of being fingerprinted and having an FBI and Division of Criminal Justice of New York State background check performed. From the information provided, NYSED will then review and give or deny clearance for employment.
In order to expedite the application process, which might take as long as six to eight weeks just to gain clearance, prospective employees are encouraged to begin the process now. Ulster BOCES on Route 32 North in New Paltz has the necessary forms (fingerprint cards, instructions, and release forms) available. The actual fingerprinting can be done by the Sheriff, local, or state police departments. There is no charge for the fingerprinting itself, however the background check and processing costs $74. This processing fee must be paid in the form of a postal money order, a certified check, or a school district check made payable to the New York State Education Department. The processing fee is due at the time of the fingerprinting.
The fingerprinting provisions of the Project SAVE Legislation also affect those applying for certification as school administrators, teachers, or teaching assistants.
For further information, please contact the Personnel Office at Ulster BOCES at (845) 255-1400, ext. 232.
