The Ulster BOCES Hudson Valley Pathways Academy (HVPA) marked a significant milestone on June 2, hosting a Completion Celebration for three young scholars who successfully completed six years of rigorous academic and professional training through HVPA and SUNY Ulster. The event was held at Selux Corporation, a longtime industry partner located in Highland.
The ceremony was planned by the students and emceed by current HVPA young scholars Cameren Thibault-Edmonds, Natalie Winrow, James DeWitt, Sterling Bohn, Sky Parks, Christian Melecio, Ethan Colon, Michael Binns, and Jacob Sauers and celebrated the achievements of this year’s completers: Max Roque, Artemis Clemente, and Jacob Ramatour.
HVPA is known for cultivating strong academic-industry partnerships to help students graduate career-ready. One standout example is Selux Corporation, which designs and manufactures state-of-the-art, energy-efficient lighting for indoor and outdoor environments. This year, the company hired four HVPA scholars who had previously interned there through the program.
During the event, HVPA also honored the Council of Industry with the Industry Partner of the Year Award. The Council has served as the Hudson Valley's manufacturers association since 1910 and continues to support workforce development in the region.
“We often find that we learn more from the students than they learn from us,” said Johnnieanne Hansen, Vice President of the Council of Industry. “These young scholars have overcome challenges, demonstrated resilience, and shown tremendous growth. That is truly remarkable. HVPA offers pathways, yes—but more importantly, it fosters lasting partnerships. Once you're part of something this strong, you're connected for life.”
Dr. Jonah Schenker, District Superintendent of Ulster BOCES, emphasized the importance of these collaborations. “The success of our graduates is a testament to the power of partnership between education and industry,” he said. “Through our work with Selux and other local businesses, students gain hands-on experience and the professional development needed to thrive in the workforce.”
Chris McConnell, CFO at Selux Corporation, echoed this sentiment. “We are proud to be part of a program that not only educates but empowers the next generation of professionals,” he said. “These graduates have shown tremendous dedication and skill, and we look forward to seeing their continued impact in the industry.”
The Completion Celebration marked both the culmination of the students’ educational journeys and the beginning of their professional careers. Each graduate leaves the program equipped with a strong foundation of skills, experience, and confidence to contribute meaningfully to their communities and industries.
Following the ceremony, guests were invited to tour Selux’s offices and manufacturing facilities.
