Elizabeth Kate Harris, a graduating senior at Highland High School who completed the Ulster BOCES Career Pathways New Visions Health program, has been named a semifinalist in the 2026 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program, one of the nation's highest honors for graduating high school seniors.

Harris was selected as one of 627 semifinalists nationwide from a pool of more than 6,500 candidates expected to graduate from U.S. high schools in 2026. The prestigious recognition honors students for outstanding academic achievement, leadership, character, and service to their schools and communities.

Established in 1964 by executive order of the President, the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program recognizes some of the nation's most distinguished graduating seniors. Scholars are selected based on accomplishments in academics, leadership, service and, in some cases, artistic or career and technical education achievement. Each year, up to 161 students are ultimately named U.S. Presidential Scholars and receive the Presidential Scholars Medallion.

A distinguished panel of educators reviewed submissions from across the country to select this year's semifinalists. Final selections for the 2026 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program will be announced in the coming months by U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon.

Through the Ulster BOCES New Visions Health program, Harris gained firsthand exposure to careers in healthcare while strengthening the academic and professional skills needed for success in college and future employment. Her recognition as a Presidential Scholars Program semifinalist reflects a sustained commitment to excellence both in and out of the classroom.

Harris's achievement highlights the caliber of students served through Ulster BOCES programs and the strong partnership between Ulster BOCES and its component school districts in preparing students for future success.
