Ulster BOCES Step Up! Program Prepares Students for Future Success While Contributing to School Community

The Step Up! program at the Ulster BOCES Center for Innovative Teaching & Learning (CITL) at Mt. Marion, run by Occupational Therapists (OTs) Laura Dipper and Katharine Heuman-Heeney and Occupational Therapist Assistant Elizabeth Walkden, helps students build essential life and vocational skills. Designed as a stepping stone to the Level Up! Program at the CITL at Port Ewen and other hands-on initiatives, Step Up! is tailored for middle schoolers  from grades 5-8 preparing them for future success in high school programs at Port Ewen and beyond.

During 30-minute occupational therapy sessions, students engage in real-world “jobs” that teach organizational skills, time management, and responsibility. Tasks such as delivering mail or stocking classrooms—activities that require signing in, wearing badges, and checking off to-do lists—create a structured environment where students thrive. These experiences help students develop fine motor skills and gain invaluable interpersonal skills as they interact with others.

One of students’ favorite activities is operating the Step Up! Café coffee cart, which is stationed outside the OT room on designated days. The baked goods offered at the café are prepared in the OT room. When feasible, the cart is also pushed through the hallways, allowing students to deliver items and take orders from staff.

The coffee cart challenges students to greet staff, take orders, and make deliveries. These interactions boost confidence, responsibility, and self-esteem. “One of the biggest benefits is their growing sense of pride and self-esteem. I can see it in their enthusiasm and participation,” says Dipper. “Doing tasks that directly benefit the school community is what they love to do the most.”

For those not yet ready to interact with others, alternative projects offer equally meaningful engagement. One student, for instance, designed an apron logo using a Cricut machine. The joy of seeing their creation worn by staff members highlights the program’s ability to foster inclusion and creativity.

Dipper also notes remarkable growth among participants. “Some students who struggled with structure at first are now completing their tasks ahead of schedule, showing incredible progress in independence and confidence,” she observes.

Beyond practical skills, students are developing physical and mental endurance, paving the way for a seamless transition to high school.

The Step Up! initiative exemplifies how innovative, hands-on learning can transform middle schoolers into young professionals, equipping them with tools to succeed academically, socially, and personally, all while contributing to their school community.

Principal Tonya Griffiths said, "The Step Up program is such an exciting opportunity for our middle school students to begin exploring their vocational interests while building confidence and independence. Watching our students take pride in their work, develop new skills, and contribute meaningfully to our school community is truly inspiring. This program is all about helping students discover their potential and prepare for their next adventure in high school, where they have the Level Up! program. It’s amazing to see them shine!"
