Ulster BOCES Students Launch Handmade Sailboats

Over the last eight months, ten Ulster BOCES Career & Technical Center students have worked alongside adult volunteers from the Riverport Wooden Boat School in Kingston to build two Optimist Pram sailboats. The class culminated with a ceremonial boat christening and boat launch. Students also had the opportunity to test their boating skills with a row at Kingston Point Beach. For many of the students this was the first time they were ever out on the water.

TOPS Instructor Ronnie Greene said, "Besides learning basic woodworking skills through my class, they also learned some pretty impressive technical skills at the boating school. Seeing how far they've all come makes me feel very proud."

In this class, students learned different woodworking skills, shop safety, and boat building. They also made their own wooden oars and toolboxes.

The boats will be used by the Riverport Wooden Boat School to help teach youngsters how to sail over the summer.
