Ulster BOCES Students Show Off Skills at State Competition

Twenty-nine Ulster BOCES Career & Technical Center students competed in timed trade, leadership, and community service contests during the 2018 SkillsUSA State Conference, held in Syracuse, New York, April 25-27. Four students came in first in their respective categories and one student placed second. The first-place students, who are from Ellenville, New Paltz, and Wallkill Central School Districts, have secured a spot at the national competition in Louisville, Kentucky, June 25-29.

Joseph Pushman, a Motorcycle/Outdoor Power/Turf Management student from the Wallkill Central School District, placed first in the Motorcycle Service Technology category for the second year in a row. Joe says he is eager to once again rival students from across the country in the national contest. Joe placed 11th in the same class during last year's national competition.

Joe says the stakes were higher at the state level this year. "The kids were more competitive. Some were there last year, so that raised the bar," adding that his performance during the national competition will be a factor in choosing his career path. "I am going to see what I get from scholarships and in job offers."

In addition to Joe's impressive achievements, other Ulster BOCES winners included:

  • Cody Bellotti, a CISCO student from Wallkill Central School District, placed first in the Community Service category.
  • Giulia Danisi, a Fashion Design student from New Paltz Central School District, placed first in the Community Service category.
  • Arye Gittleman, a Fashion Design student from Ellenville Central School District, placed first in the Community Service category.
  • Caleb Quick, a Motorcycle/Outdoor Power/Turf Management student from Ellenville Central School District, placed second in the Small Engine Service category.
