Authentic learning experiences have the power to transform education by creating opportunities for students to connect their learning to the world around them. Throughout the 2025-26 school year, Ulster BOCES students and educators participated in Whole Brain Whole Child Project-Based Learning (PBL) cycles designed to foster curiosity, collaboration, creativity, and deeper learning.

Led by faculty and staff from the Center for Innovative Teaching & Learning (CITL), these learning experiences engaged students across Ulster BOCES school programs in meaningful projects that encouraged them to explore real-world questions, develop critical skills, and take ownership of their learning.

Project-Based Learning places students at the center of the learning process, empowering them to investigate authentic challenges, collaborate with peers, and apply their knowledge in purposeful ways. Throughout the year, students participated in projects that encouraged inquiry, reflection, and problem-solving while strengthening communication, creativity, and critical thinking skills.

At the same time, educators embraced innovative instructional approaches that supported student voice and choice, creating learning environments where students could discover their strengths and engage more deeply with content. These experiences provided opportunities for both students and educators to learn, grow, and reflect together.

As projects unfolded across programs, school communities came together to celebrate accomplishments, share learning, and recognize the growth that occurred throughout the process. Moments of reflection and celebration highlighted not only the final products students created, but also the resilience, collaboration, and perseverance they demonstrated along the way.

The work reflects CITL’s commitment to the Whole Brain Whole Child approach, which prioritizes the development of the whole learner by supporting academic growth alongside social, emotional, and cognitive development. Through Project-Based Learning, students are empowered to bring their authentic selves to the learning process while developing the skills and confidence needed for future success.

As the school year comes to a close, the lessons learned, relationships built, and successes celebrated will continue to inform future learning opportunities. Together, students, educators, and CITL faculty and staff are helping to build learning environments where engagement, innovation, and deeper learning empower every student to thrive.
