Title III Consortium: The Schools They Deserve- Equitable Access to High Quality Learning
-
The Jane Bullowa Conference Center

The day will begin with an inspiring keynote by Jo Napolitano, a New York-based journalist and writer, based on her compelling book: The School I Deserve: Six Young Refugees and Their Fight for Equality in America. Born in Bogota, Colombia, Napolitano was abandoned at a bus stop by her birthmother when she was just a day old. Placed in an orphanage, she nearly died of starvation before she was adopted by a blue-collar family from New York. She was raised by a single parent and is a first-generation college graduate having earned her bachelors from Medill at Northwestern University. She believes no child's life should be left to chance.

Dr. Beverly Falk, Director of the Graduate Programs in Early Childhood Education at CCNY's School of Education and Project Director for the The High Quality Early Learning Project will lead a workshop entitled Advancing Equity in Early Childhood Education: High Quality Early Learning Practices that Affirm Diversity. Dr. Falk will share key elements of early learning environments that incorporate practices based on the science of early learning and culturally/linguistically responsive teaching. Video footage from classrooms that support diverse learners will be shown, followed by discussions of the challenges teachers face and the supports that are needed to put these practices into place.

Some Time will be provided for Ulster BOCES Title III consortium members to plan their summer academies.

The first 50 registrants will be provided with a copy of The School I Deserve: Six Young Refugees and Their Fight for Equality in America by Jo Napolitano.

A light breakfast and lunch will be provided.
