Ulster BOCES Welcomes Nearly 50 New Employees Through New Staff Academy

The Ulster BOCES Human Resources Department recently hosted two sessions of its New Staff Academy, welcoming nearly 50 new employees to the agency during events held on March 17 and April 14 at the Jane Bullowa Conference Center.

The academy, designed to introduce new hires to the organization’s mission, culture, and operations, brought together staff from a wide range of roles, including administrators, teachers, nurses, clinicians, bus drivers, teacher aides, and custodial staff.

“We’re growing at Ulster BOCES,” said Evelyn Lafontaine, Ulster BOCES Director of Human Resources, highlighting the continued expansion of programs and services across the agency. “This experience gives new employees the opportunity to connect with one another, learn about our agency, and share their goals for the current school year.”

Each session focused on building relationships and fostering a sense of belonging from day one. New staff participated in CREW-style activities that encouraged teamwork and collaboration, while also learning about the structure and impact of Ulster BOCES. Interactive sessions included a Jeopardy-style game that tested participants’ knowledge of the agency, along with presentations on employee benefits and available resources.

The April 14 session alone welcomed more than 20 new employees, all of whom engaged in activities aimed at strengthening connections and deepening their understanding of the organization’s work in supporting students, schools, and the broader community.

Human Resources staff emphasized the importance of onboarding experiences, including benefits information sessions, interactive games, and opportunities to connect with staff, in building a strong and unified workforce. By creating opportunities for engagement and alignment early on, the program helps ensure that employees feel supported and prepared in their new roles.

Ulster BOCES leaders expressed enthusiasm about the newest members of their team.

“We are proud to welcome these new team members and look forward to the contributions they will make,” Lafontaine said. “Their dedication and diverse expertise will play an important role as we continue to expand our programs and services.”

With nearly 50 new staff members now onboarded through the academy, Ulster BOCES continues to invest in its people—strengthening its commitment to educational excellence and community impact.
