Students Share Their Vision for the Future of Learning on Latest Episode of Leading for Deeper Learning with Ulster BOCES

What happens when educators stop talking about students and start listening to them?

That question is at the heart of the latest episode of Leading for Deeper Learning with Ulster BOCES, where District Superintendent Dr. Jonah Schenker sits down with four student leaders from across Ulster BOCES programs to discuss learning, belonging, opportunity, and what students believe schools should look like in the future.

Representing programs including Career Pathways Programs and the Center for Innovative Teaching & Learning, the students share the experiences that have had the greatest impact on their growth and development. Throughout the conversation, they highlight the value of authentic, hands-on learning opportunities that connect classroom learning to real-world experiences.

Students discuss how internships, technical education programs, community partnerships, and project-based learning help make learning more meaningful while allowing them to explore interests, develop skills, and discover future career pathways.

The episode also explores the importance of belonging, student voice, and learner agency. Students reflect on the role educators play in creating supportive environments where learners feel connected, challenged, and empowered to succeed. They also share how learning through challenges and failure has helped them build resilience, confidence, and problem-solving skills.

As New York continues advancing the work of NY Inspires and reimagining what it means to graduate ready for college, career, and civic life, the conversation serves as a powerful reminder that students are not simply recipients of educational change—they are essential partners in shaping it.

The episode reflects Ulster BOCES' commitment to deeper learning and the North Star Educational Commitments, which emphasize belonging, engagement, curiosity, and meaningful pathways for every learner.
